Cabling

We have a VIDEO on this! But basically, you’ll want to note your connection types at your source, sub (inputs and outputs) and on your main monitors. If you have other gear handling the path to/from the sub, then account for those cable types. Next, procure the cables at the lengths you’ll need. Particularly if you’re running RCA, try to keep that cable length to a tidy minimum. Long unbalanced cable runs can be prone to picking up noise.

Follow your Left signal path from your source, to the sub inputs, to the monitors, and connect your cables all along the path. Repeat for the Right channel.

Level Matching

  • Turn the volume knob counter clockwise as far as it will go.

  • Turn the sub on.

  • Start playing material from your playback device at a low volume

  • Slowly turn the volume knob clockwise to the center detente, -0 dB position. Repeat these steps for every speaker you’re using.

  • Sit in your listening position, and turn the volume up on your playback device to the desired level.

  • You probably want to leave input levels on your mains at or near unity, so use the input gain knob on the sub as your adjustment for level matching.

Fundamentally, a well-integrated sub should not draw attention to itself. It should just sound like your mains are effortlessly reaching down into the ~20Hz range. If you find yourself thinking "I can really hear the sub," it's either too loud, crossed over incorrectly (we recommend 80Hz for Kali mains), or maybe both. Dial it back until it disappears, then bring it up just slightly. Without getting too technical about it, this is where a familiar reference track comes in handy!
